How To Keep Going As A Writer And Finish That Novel

Sometimes I don’t want to write. The children are restless, I am sleep deprived, there are a million other jobs to do… Often I lack the ideas and inspiration that so often make writing easy for me.

I used to stop writing. I would devote myself to other things and tell myself I Would write another day, that my muse would return.

Then another day would pass without writing.

And another.

Pretty soon weeks and months would pass and I would have written little or nothing. It’s okay, I would tell myself, I am waiting for inspiration.

The only thing was, inspiration didn’t turn up with a suitcase of ideas bulging from her latest break away from me. She didn’t knock on the front door with a copy of The Watchtower and a great idea for a thriller involving a spanner, asparagus and a copy of The Angling Times.

There is only one way to find inspiration and that is not to expect it to turn up. Nothing is given for free in this life and that includes the ability to write. You have to sit down, turn the computer on or open your notebook and start.
