Thinking of Getting an Allotment?

Have you ever thought about growing your own fruit and vegetables? Perhaps you live somewhere without a garden and would like an outside space?

If you have ever considered allotmenting, find your nearest association and put your name down now before you do anything else. It’s often as easy as emailing the person listed on the website for prospective tenants.

The reason to do it now is that allotments have waiting lists and some of them can be very, very long. In areas with fewer allotment plots or greater numbers of wannabe allotmenteers, you could be waiting for a year or even two. You can always say ‘no thank you’ in two years time, but if you don’t put your name down now you’ll be waiting even longer.

Whilst you wait, you can start researching and gathering information. You might want to gather tools but hold fire on seeds as they have expiry dates. Perhaps you could practise planting some windowsill herbs? Don’t worry if they fail, that very failure will teach you how to become a better gardener. You could volunteer at a community garden or in one of the local parks with friends’ associations. Learn what you can in advance so you can hit the ground running. When you get that plot you don’t know what time of year it will be and how much…
